Support TOPS

Amy Baptiste and Matt Hitzeroth experiment in momentumTeachers + Occidental = Partnership in Science (TOPS) is a 25+ year-old collaboration between Los Angeles area teachers, their school districts, and Occidental College’s faculty and staff to advance STEM education at high and middle schools by using on-site, technology-enhanced, hands-on laboratories. The intellectual support of classroom teachers and Occidental faculty/staff has allowed the collaboration to develop new programs to address changing educational needs and adapt to changing expectations for STEM education. In the mid-1990’s, TOPS adopted a subscription model wherein each school participating in the TOPS program provides a modest level of financial support toward supplies and maintaining the partnership’s resources. The partnership has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the California Post-Secondary Education Commission, as well as numerous more modest awards. Most recently, TOPS was recognized by the Phi Beta Kappa Society in their “Arts & Sciences Cities of Distinction” award.  The TOPS program welcomes the intellectual, human resource, and financial support from those interested in improving STEM options for high and middle school students in the Los Angeles area. Our communities, state, and world need STEM-educated students to address Rowland Students Caffeine Labour future problems, and they need you.
